Folies Bergère poster - a film by Marc Fitoussi
This is wonderful – I love this film. Balanced, wise & poetic… A wonderful experience. It really captures the magic of Paris. The film is intelligent and does something that’s quite rare – it treads very lightly. Full of generosity of spirit, wonderfully visual, and warm-hearted. It’s a beautiful film – a lot of fun.
The characters are real and the story entertaining. A relationship comedy of a gentle sort that proceeds in ways we can’t predict, ending in a place we would never have imagined. It’s a surprise in almost every way. Huppert is as good as you’d expect. At 61, she is as beautiful as ever, but not overtly so. She convinces us that she is a farmer’s wife and we see what she values about that. And when Fitoussi asks for a big moment towards the end, Huppert unleashes the emotion with a close-up that reminds us of the power under the hood. The film keeps its purpose hidden. It’s an odd kind of romance, to be sure, but rewarding for anyone not born yesterday.
Keeping the comic and the poignant in perfect balance, Fitoussi gives Huppert what she rarely gets – a chance to be endearing.

The fabulous Isabelle Huppert leads an exceptional cast in the wonderfully charming and poignant new romance from writer/director Marc Fitoussi.

Long married 50-somethings Brigitte (Huppert) and Xavier (Jean-Pierre Darroussin) are prize cattle breeders in regional France. Life is good, but the departure of their children from home has thrown Brigitte’s world into flux, as she finds herself locked into routine. She keeps hoping for something else, something more.

A party held by students on the adjoining property accelerates this latent crisis and Brigitte impulsively sets off for Paris under the guise of a doctor’s appointment. The city immediately invigorates her, and when she meets a charming Danish gentleman (Michael Nyqvist, As It Is In Heaven, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo), she impulsively allows herself to be flattered by his attentions…

Beautifully performed by the central leads but also expertly supported by Marina Foïs, Audrey Dana, Pio Marmaï, Clément Métayer and Anaïs Demoustier, FOLIES BERGÈRE is a deliciously appealing fable about the choices of everyday life, and a reminder that it’s never too late to change.
