OFFICIAL SELECTION - 2025 ITALIAN FILM FESTIVAL (17 SEP-22 OCT)
Diamonds - a film by Ferzan Özpetek
Ozpetek's best, most adorable and heartfelt film: a spacious, sparkling vaudeville between melodrama and comedy, full of ideas and heart-warming moments.
A genuine crowd-pleaser, set in its entirety in one of the most sparkly and colourful places imaginable. The time flies by. The cast is well-matched, the actresses are all brilliant and well-centred, and even the smallest roles add value. There’s a little bit of everything in the film. In short, the full breadth of Ozpetek’s universe in its most sensational form.
Ferzan Ozpetek follows his usual path of inspiration, this time giving way to the charm of a universe made of silks and mannequins, brooches and buttons, where seamstresses and costume designers showcase their countless talents. The Diamonds of the title are the actresses, but the ring that makes them shine is Ozpetek.

WINNER – 2025 NASTRI D’ARGENTO AWARDS – Film of the Year
WINNER – 2025 ITALIAN ACADEMY (DAVID DI DONATELLO) AWARDS – Audience Award

Gathering 18 of Italy’s most celebrated contemporary actresses, acclaimed writer/director Ferzan Özpetek's dazzling crowd-pleaser DIAMONDS is a joyous and warm-hearted tribute to the majesty of the movie costume, following the female employees of a bustling 1970s Roman fashion house as they seek to fulfil a challenging new commission.

Present day: A film director (Özpetek, playing himself) has invited his favourite actresses over for lunch to help him develop his next work. He doesn’t reveal much, but asks them to read over a script. He observes them, collecting reactions and suggestions, and assigns parts, transporting them all into another era…

1974: sisters Alberta (Luisa Ranieri) and Gabriella (Jasmine Trinca) – as different as they are close - head up Sartoria Canova, a prestigious atelier in the Testaccio neighbourhood, specialising in film and theatre; we follow as they and the virtuoso dressmakers they employ are tasked by a renowned but irritable director (Stefano Accorsi) with creating wardrobes for an 18th Century historical epic, including a spectacular dress needed for the picture’s concluding scene. Outside and within the studio, passions, anxieties and unbreakable bonds intertwine as the line between reality and fiction begins to blur…

A huge box office hit upon its Italian release, DIAMONDS is Özpetek at his beguiling best, delivering a richly sincere, thoroughly entertaining love letter to the emotional power of cinema, and the binding strength of sisterhood.
