Brother and Sister - a film by Arnaud Desplechin
Sensual and graceful. Desplechin masters his subject from A to Z. He was believed to be Truffaut's heir. He is becoming France's Bergman.
Compelling. Acting is rarely better than what this sterling cast — with Marion Cotillard and Melvil Poupaud at its heart — brings to a layered tale of compound emotional crises. This should find takers wherever intelligent, serious drama tinged with humour is welcome.
Scintillating. This is Desplechin at his most relaxed and masterful, and the pleasure watching him as he sashays through the story and around the vast ensemble of characters while always keeping his eye on the thematic prize is immense indeed. Marion Cotillard is the greatest actor working in the world today.
Immersive. Rarely has a film expressed so clearly that there is no good reason to hate someone beyond yourself. This beautiful idea is embodied by a cast capable of a thousand nuances.
Sumptuous. A masterful film about inextricable family conflicts.
A knockout sibling reverie. Desplechin - revisiting favourite topics, among them literature, anthropology, Judaism and the cathartic effects of acting - is a keen observer of the human comedy, and Cottillard and Poupaud are at the top of their game, finding exquisite grace notes.

OFFICIAL SELECTION – 2022 CANNES INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL (In Competition)

Academy Award®-winner Marion Cotillard and Melvil Poupaud star in the intelligent and emotionally involving drama from acclaimed writer/director Arnaud Desplechin (Kings & Queen, A Christmas Tale), as decades-long estranged siblings forced back into each other’s orbit by a family emergency.

Roubaix, France. Alice (Cotillard) is a famous stage actress, who graces billboards and fills theatres with adoring fans. One of her younger brothers Louis (Poupaud) found early success as an author, but after losing his young son in tragic circumstances, has retreated from the city with his wife Faunia (Golshifteh Farahani) for the remote Pyrenees to write, filling his prose with family secrets to his sister's chagrin. For more than twenty years, the two have gone out of their way to avoid each other. But when their elderly parents are involved in an accident, Alice and Louis can no longer put off the inevitable…

A resounding critical success in France in late 2022, Desplechin’s film - his seventh to premiere in Official Competition at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival - convincingly tackles the dynamics of family ties and rivalries, exploring pride, jealousy and how (perceived) slights and infringements of the past can linger beyond logical explanation. In Cotillard and Poupaud he has two actors at the very top of their game, delivering nuanced, pitch-perfect performances.
