Heartwarming. A terrific film about how a small axe can bring down a big tree. A film full of beautiful human moments.
At once intimate and epic, resurrects a little-known act of defiance from Spain’s democratic transition and restores its urgency, warmth, and weight. The deep humanity of Torre Baró shines through every frame, heart-wrenching and heart-warming at once.

CENTERPIECE SELECTION - 2025 SPANISH FILM FESTIVAL

Inspired by a true story, Marcel Barrena's five-time Goya Award winner is a striking new drama starring the superb Eduard Fernández as a bus driver whose act of peaceful dissidence transformed modern Barcelona during the city's boom in the late 1970s.

1978. The Torre Baró settlement on the outskirts of Barcelona is a neighbourhood of shacks, built by people from Extremadura and Andalusia. Although the community has been requesting improvements for years, they have been ignored by the state. One of the residents, Manolo Vital (Fernández), works down the hill in the city as a bus driver on line 47. Encouraged by his neighbours to get involved in their fight, and to debunk City Council’s claims that buses cannot climb the hills in his district, one day Manolo decides to hijack his own bus and attempt to prove that you can...

A rousing drama about neighbourhood pride, natural justice and the power of people coming together to create change, EL 47 is stirring viewing.
