The Other Side of Hope

★★★★★
“Screamingly funny. Gorgeous, marbled with melancholy and warmed through with an irresistible sense of compassion, this is the work of a master filmmaker at the very top of his game. Simply sublime.“
Allan Hunter, THE LIST

★★★★★
“Gorgeous and cuttingly poignant. You wonder how on earth Kaurismäki can bring a smile back to our faces, let alone the torrents of laughter, later on, that his film manages to unleash. You could never have heard of Aki Kaurismäki and come away from this film knowing exactly what the fuss has always been about. He has a precious knack for jokes that work beautifully in any language.“
Tim Robey, THE TELEGRAPH

“A whimsical joy from start to finish. Pure, unadulterated cinematic pleasure.“
David Jenkins, LITTLE WHITE LIES

★★★★★
“Effortlessly funny. A typically deadpan and brilliantly observed comic study.“
Geoffrey Macnab, THE INDEPENDENT

WINNER – FIPRESCI GRAND PRIX – BEST FILM OF 2017
WINNER – 2017 BERLIN FILM FESTIVAL – BEST DIRECTOR
OFFICIAL SELECTION – 2017 TORONTO, TELLURIDE, SYDNEY & NEW YORK FILM FESTIVALS

Winner of the Silver Bear for Best Director at the 2017 Berlinale, where it topped the prestigious Screen International critics’ poll, and selected as Best Film of the Year by the International Federation of Film Critics, the hilarious and poignant new dramedy from Finnish master Aki Kaurismäki (Drifting Clouds, Le Havre, The Man Without A Past) is a hugely enjoyable tale of the friendship between a young immigrant and an Helsinki restaurateur.

After arriving in Finland from Syria as a stowaway on a coal freighter, Khaled (Sherwan Haji) applies for asylum. Without much hope of success with the authorities, he slips underground in the capital. After crossing paths with stoic travelling shirt salesman-turned-restauranteur Wikström (Sakari Kuosmanen), he fnally fnds some stability. But it seems getting into Finland is much, much easier than getting out again…

One of the world’s great humanist filmmakers, Kaurismäki’s amusing, thoughtful films depict difficult situations in society and people coming together in solidarity. With his trademark droll humour, vintage 35mm colour palette and retro styling, here he tackles one of the fundamental human issues of our time, never shying away from hardship, but still finding cause for optimism. This wry and heartfelt film is a masterful swansong from one of cinema’s finest, most beloved auteurs.
