Based on events from her own childhood, writer/director Ginevra Elkann’s terrific debut feature IF ONLY is a perceptive, funny and deeply-moving study of the disconnect felt by children of divorcing parents, and how childhood memories are not always quite as they seem.

It’s the 1980s. Spirited 8 year-old Alma (radiant newcomer Oro De Commarque) and her two older brothers, Jean, 11, and Seb, 14 are being raised in Paris by their devoutly Russian-Orthodox mother (Céline Sallette) and stepfather.

While their mother arranges the family’s imminent move to Canada, she ships the kids off to Rome to spend the winter holidays with their shambolic, self-absorbed Italian father, Carlo (Riccardo Scamarcio), a failing screenwriter. Carlo can’t afford to take them skiing as promised, so instead he and his “co-writer” Benedetta (Alba Rohrwacher) head everyone off to the shabby coastal home of an American colleague, with a plan to use the time salvaging his latest screenplay. As the children are forced to adapt to their father’s unconventional values, they grapple with a newfound liberation that brings both profound and unexpected experiences. But coursing through their idyllic seaside interlude is Alma’s intense and constant longing for her parents to reunite, certain that (despite all the evidence to the contrary) it’s just a matter of time…

Seamlessly directing her superb ensemble cast, with IF ONLY Elkann – an established producer and former assistant to Bernardo Bertolucci and Anthony Minghella – has created a film of honesty, empathy and genuine distinction.
